The Madison Public Art Project is delighted to commission this site-specific public art mural by the artist known as Audifax located under the 12/18 Beltline Hwy at the Monona Drive exit ramp in partnership with the City of Monona and Wisconsin DOT. Audifax was inspired by Hokusai who created the famous “Great Wave." For this Riding Waves mural, six individual pillars serve as her most unique canvas to date. Audifax connects the pillars together with her artistic expression inspired by the nearby waters of Lake Monona and Lake Waubesa using her artistic voice to highlight a more equitable future. This skillful hand painted mural depicts the ever-changing waters as a metaphor to bring attention to mental health awareness in our society. The expressive waves beautify an underutilized site and seek to destigmatize mental illness by integrating art directly into the built environment. This mural gives people the opportunity to engage and reflect on their own mental health journey as they ride past.
